Definição
A primeira coisa que você precisa saber é o que é uma cadeia muscular, e isso parte do princípio de que tudo no nosso corpo é interligado. Por isso, a definição é: um conjunto de músculos com várias articulações, que se movimentam na mesma direção e sentido de forma interdependente, como se fosse um único músculo.
Essas cadeias se recobrem de modo que, se você conseguisse visualizá-las, perceberia que a estrutura lembra a sobreposição de telhas em um telhado.
Elas nos sustentam e nos movimentam
Se você consegue sustentar seu próprio corpo em pé ou mesmo se movimentar, isso se deve à ação das cadeias musculares.
A cadeia é composta pelos músculos estáticos é o que permite que o corpo fique em pé. Para isso, esses músculos precisam ter um tônus elevado e uma grande quantidade de tecido conjuntivo, pois são as características que vão garantir a sustentação. Eles exercem um efeito contrário à ação da gravidade e para isso estão constantemente contraídos, ainda que apenas parcialmente.
Já os nossos movimentos voluntários dependem da cadeia de músculos dinâmicos. Ao contrário dos anteriores, eles possuem menos tecido conjuntivo em sua estrutura e um tônus mais baixo, justamente para facilitar a sua movimentação. Por conta disso, eles também podem ficar bem flácidos, especialmente quando não são exercitados frequentemente.

Madame Mézières, fisioterapeuta francesa, foi uma das precursoras do conceito das cadeias musculares. E ela dizia que o funcionamento dessas estruturas era regido por três leis.
A primeira delas dizia que a tentativa de correção local levaria a uma compensação à distância. A segunda lei afirma que ao tentar tensionar uma cadeia muscular, há uma tendência de rotação interna dos membros envolvidos. A terceira e última também está relacionada ao tensionamento da cadeia e diz que ele leva a um bloqueio respiratório.
Essas leis foram fundamentais na construção de todo o conhecimento que existe hoje sobre o funcionamento das cadeias musculares, especialmente para que os fisioterapeutas saibam como trabalhar essas estruturas de maneira eficiente com seus pacientes.

O pilates trabalha muito com movimentos pensados para as cadeias musculares e embora existam inúmeros benefícios por trás disso, um dos principais é prevenir ou corrigir problemas posturais.
